What is NaNoWriMo? And How to Win!

Oct 05, 2022

Every November, writers all over the world sign up for NaNoWriMo and take the next step in their writing journey: writing a novel in just 30 days!

The goal of the National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo) is for individuals to write a 50,000-word novel in 30 days. It was started as a challenge among friends in 1999, but NaNoWriMo has evolved into an international writing marathon with hundreds of thousands of participants each year!

On November 1st at midnight, writers around the globe start drafting either a new novel or an old one that needs revising. The challenge is to finish before the end of the month. Although there's no shame in planning and outlining beforehand, continuing on with a current work-in-progress is not allowed by NaNoWriMo rules. Though many people choose to break these rules according to their own writing style and needs.

To win the November writing contest, you'll need to produce 1,667 words each day on average. When you've completed 50,000 words, you may submit your work to the NaNoWriMo website to validate your word count. Winners are presented with banners and certificates.

The most crucial outcome, however, is that you will have a first draft of a novel--and the pride of knowing you met the challenge. For most writers, that's the best prize of all.

Why participate in NaNoWriMo?

If you've ever wanted to write a novel but couldn't find the time, or have tried writing novels but just can't seem to finish them, NaNoWriMo may be perfect for you. This crazy, exciting writing challenge could help you finally complete that book you've always dreamed of finishing.

You're not alone in your reasons for wanting to join NaNoWriMo. People come from all sorts of writing backgrounds, but the three main driving factors are:

  1. Writing so much, so fast may actually help your craft (even if it doesn't always feel that way)
  2. It forces you to sit down, turn off your inner editor, and work.
  3. NaNoWriMo makes the solo act of writing a novel feel like a group event. You'll not only enjoy the company of other writers, but you'll also learn from their knowledge and experience!

One of the best things about NaNoWriMo is that there are already thousands of people who have done it and can offer their own advice on how to succeed.

This year I have signed up to NanoWriMo and over the next few weeks I will offer tips and advise on how best to prepare for November. I'd love you to join me and my community for this exciting challenge. Together we can all win NaNoWrMo 2022
