Balancing a Day Job with Writing

Jun 21, 2022

It can be tough to balance a day job with writing. You have to find time to write between work and all of the other obligations that come with life. But it can be done! In this blog post, we will share tips from writers who have successfully managed to balance a day job with their writing careers. We hope that these tips will help you achieve your own work-life balance as a writer.

Work-life balance is a big topic right now. It comes up in interviews, essays, and conversations with friends or family members the majority of the time when things aren't balanced enough; we talk about work vs life - such as how someone might be too busy for their health because they've devoted every minute to everything else (including sacrificing marriage). We all have those days when it feels like nothing goes right. You might be too tired to exercise or eat healthy, your schedule is crazy busy with no time for leisure activities like cooking meals at home and going out on dates--you know? It's hard not knowing what will happen next year because of these sacrifices today so we can't take any risks! But there really comes a point where enough is finally enough and we need to draw the line.

For a creative person, it can be difficult to not feel like you're sacrificing your art by working a day job. But the truth is, many successful writers have day jobs. In fact, having a day job can actually help you become a better writer. It can give you something to write about, and it can help you develop discipline and time management skills.

You can also focus on creating for the sake of creating- because you love to write-because you are not asking your art to support your living expenses, so there is no financial pressure.

I have found that living with intention can help me find a sense of balance in my life. It's possible to grow some parts without minimizing others. When I'm with my children I am really being present for them - not checking my phone or writing email.

Of course, there are challenges that come with balancing a day job and writing. But these challenges can be overcome with some planning and effort. Here are some tips from writers who have successfully balanced a day job with their writing:

  • Set realistic goals for your writing.
  • Find a writing schedule that works for you.
  • Make use of your commute.
  • Try dictation. I double my word count dictating a story over typing it.
  • Don't be afraid to ask for help. Get a house cleaner in so you can spend that time writing instead of vacuuming!

I hope these tips will help you achieve your own work-life balance as a writer. Do you have any tips to add? Share them with us in the comments below!
