4 phases of editing: How to revise your novel

Apr 15, 2024

One of the most important aspects of creating a polished and successful novel is the editing process. It's where your rough draft transforms into a polished masterpiece that will captivate readers and leave them wanting more. However, many writers may feel overwhelmed when it comes to revising their work. That's why I want to share with you the 4 phases of editing and how they can help you revise your fiction novel.

Phase One: The Big Picture Edit

The first phase of editing is all about looking at the big picture of your novel. This means assessing the overall plot, character development, and pacing. Ask yourself if the story flows smoothly and if there are any inconsistencies or plot holes. Are your characters fully developed and do their actions make sense? Take note of any major changes that need to be made before moving on to the next phase.

Are you ready to take your novel to the next level? Before you submit it to a publisher or publish online, make sure it's in the best shape possible.

Phase Two: The Structural Edit

Once you have addressed the major issues in your novel, it's time to focus on the structure. This includes analyzing chapter lengths, scene transitions, and dialogue tags. Make sure each chapter has a purpose and moves the story forward. Pay attention to pacing and ensure that your scenes are well-balanced between action, dialogue, and description. Structural edits can also involve rearranging or cutting out unnecessary scenes to improve flow.

Phase Three: The Line Edit

Now it's time to zoom in on each sentence of your manuscript. A line edit focuses on improving sentence structure, word choice, grammar, and punctuation. Take note of repetitive words or phrases that can be replaced with stronger alternatives. Use this phase to really fine-tune your writing and ensure that every word counts.

Phase Four: The Proofread

The final phase of editing is proofreading for any remaining typos or errors in spelling or punctuation. This is also an opportunity to check for consistency in formatting such as capitalization, tense usage, and point-of-view. It's always a good idea to have a fresh set of eyes, whether it's a professional editor or a beta reader, to catch any mistakes that you may have missed.

As you can see, the editing process is not a one-and-done task. Each phase builds upon the previous one and is essential in creating a polished and well-crafted novel. However, as writers, we can often become too close to our work and may overlook important details. That's why it's crucial to have an outside perspective during the editing process.
